United Nations Environment Assembly 5.2

Hosted by the UN Environment Programme, the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) brings together representatives of the 193 Member States of the UN, businesses, civil society and other stakeholders to agree on policies to address the world’s most pressing environmental challenges.

The resumed fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-5.2) takes place online and in Nairobi on 28 February – 2 March 2022.

The overall theme for UNEA-5 is “Strengthening Actions for Nature to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals”. This highlights the pivotal role nature plays in our lives and in social, economic and environmental sustainable development.

UNEA-5 is an opportunity for Member States to share best practices for sustainability. It will create momentum for governments build on and catalyse impact on multilateral environmental efforts to protect and restore the natural world on which our economies and societies depend. Official Side Event on open dumping and open burning in Africa

ISWA will take part in an official side event together with Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), AUC, UNEP Regional Office for Africa, UN-Habitat, JICA/Min of Env of Japan, United Nations High Level Champions (UNHLC), SEI, ICLEI-Africa, C40, Practical Action, Slum Dwellers International.

Major Groups and Stakeholders Joint Global Statement

We want to make UNEA 5.2 a game-changer and act for Nature now. This joint global statement is adopted as an outcome of the virtual Global Major Groups and Stakeholders
Forum 19 (GMGSF) held online 7-10 February 2022.

ISWA has contributed to this global statement and assisted in the waste related issue.

Position Paper: Effective waste and resource management to beat plastic pollution 

ISWA recognises the need for and supports the endeavour to prepare an international agreement on monitoring, controlling, mitigating and eliminating marine litter and other forms of plastic pollution globally.
