ISWA x Ecomondo Webinar: Climate Change in Waste Management

With signing of the Paris Agreement, the international community affirmed once again to work together to combat climate change by reducing Green House Gas emissions from sectors across the board. However, with the developments discussed by the international community during the COP25 in Madrid the urgency to raise ambitions by all countries was emphasized in order to reach the climate targets. This year COP26 will most likely reaffirm the urgency.

Many industrialized countries already demonstrate that curbing emissions is possible without neglecting other relevant socio-economic development goals. In fact, climate mitigation measures offer various opportunities to establish innovative technologies and approaches, e.g. for using renewable energy, by increasing resource efficiency and through efficient use of secondary materials. In the EU, for instance, the gross domestic product (GDP) has grown by 50% since 1990 while greenhouse gases have fallen by 24% in the same period. This trend is a result of various efforts and measures by all sectors.

It is recognized that the waste sector can play a vital role in Green House Gas mitigation, especially through application of circular economy approaches. Moreover, the EU Green Deal aims to further mobilize EU member states to increase their interventions for Green House Gas emissions reduction and to adjust the legal framework and streamlined approaches for joint action. In parallel, other recent EU framework directives such as the Hydrogen Strategy (July 2020) and the Methane Reduction Strategy (Oct 2020) will support these efforts.

During this webinar our speakers will dive into the current status, strategies and some solutions towards combating climate change within the Waste Sector.
